Bracken create and sell digital tools that give your work a more traditionally printed or hand-crafted appearance — with all the ‘imperfections’ that come along with it. This is one of the best asset collections that I have found and they clearly had a lot of love involved in their creation.

I particularly like Mr. Toner which produces results resembling that of a well-worn photocopier; and also Miss. Printed which simulates letterpress printing. By placing a paper texture on a layer behind this, you can make them look even more convincing.

Bracken are really worth following on Instagram for ideas on how to apply their products, and for keeping yourself up-to-date on new releases.

Here’s an incredible online tool that dithers any image of your choosing. Dithering is a technique that uses patterns of pixels to simulate extra colours and smooth gradations. Early computers made use of this as they had very limited palettes of colours. Today, dithering can be used to make your images load quicker on the web, and of course, to invoke a retro appearance to photographs and art.

You can upload a picture of your choice and get to work with the editor panel until you’re happy with things… Or you can use a preset to emulate 8-bit consoles / computers, such as the Apple II, Nintendo Gameboy, and ZX Spectrum. These systems had to use dithering in order to support shaded imagery, such as depicting a photograph.

Developed by Andre Felipe since 2008, this website is an inspirational library focusing exclusively on contemporary typographical and graphical posters. Handily, these are categorised and searchable by keywords, dominant colour, and the country of origin (amongst other properties).

Registered users of the site can also make ‘collections’ which are open thematic sets — as an example, the screenshot above shows a portion of a collection based upon the idea of movement.
